CUSTOM AGGREGATION

A thematic custom aggregation of the MADE consists in merging one or more classes together to obtain a version of the data bases that suits best the requirements of specific applications.

A custom aggregation can be requested from full resolution data sets; the requests for custom aggregations should be directed to the NFPI of the relevant country. If you are already a registered user you please log in the system to submit your request.

The public domain spatially aggregated data set retains the full power of the original data set: you can exploit all the power of the LCCS coding to perform complex queries and you can re-aggregate the data thematically to extract exactly the information you need.

Africover also provides some thematic aggregations designed to answer the information requirements of most users (they can be accessed from the metadata of the metadata of the public domain spatially aggregated data sets).

If your needs are not met by the public domain data, a custom aggregation can be requested from the full resolution data sets. The user MUST SPECIFY what s/he requires in the custom aggregation.

For this country the full resolution Africover data set are:

Full Resolution Data Sets

Data Set Title Producer: Status: Metadata: Classification:
** Eritrea - Multipurpose Landcover database (Africover) FAO Africover Complete Available On Demand
Eritrea - Boundaries FAO Africover Complete Available Public Domain
Eritrea - Geomorphology / Landform and Lithology FAO Africover Complete Available On Demand
Eritrea - Rivers (Africover) FAO Africover Complete Available Public Domain
Eritrea - Roads (Africover) FAO Africover Complete Available Public Domain
Eritrea - Towns FAO Africover Complete Available Public Domain

* Data set to be available from March, 2003.
** The user is expected to contact the National Focal Point Institution and submit an official request to obtain the approval for the "On Demand" Data Set release.

It is essential for a proper correct use of Data Set to consult the Technical Insight section.

The following subsection are indispensable:

LCCS

This subsection gives the users an overview of the basic land cover classification system used to create the thematic classes

Cartographic Standard

This subsection allows the users to understand the cartographic standard applied in database creation. Particularly important is to deep understand the “mixed unit” concept.

Inside MADE

This subsection provides the full overview of the database structure.

Each data base is completed by a document that explains how to understand and use the data base; it contains also the legend and the statistics required to optimize its use. See an example of MADE documentation.

Aggregation

Understanding public domain land cover data sets:
spatial vs thematic aggregation

FAO Africover distributes a public domain spatially aggregated version of the full resolution land cover data set.

The thematic content of the spatially aggregated data set is very similar to the original data set:the aggregation is performed at a spatial level setting a threshold under which the polygons are dissolved in the polygons containing them. See the table summarizing the aggregation parameters.

The public domain spatially aggregated data set retains the full power of the original data set: you can exploit all the power of the LCCS coding to perform complex queries and you can re-aggregate the data thematically to extract exactly the information you need.

Africover also provides some thematic aggregations designed to answer the information requirements of most users.
