Dichotomous Classification Phase

The dichotomous phase consists of three classification levels, which define eight major land cover classes in the third level as indicated below :

First level Second level Third level
PRIMARILY VEGETATED

TERRESTRIAL
MANAGED TERRESTRIAL AREAS
AQUATIC or
REGULARLY FLOODED
NATURAL and SEMI-NATURAL TERRESTRIAL VEGETATION

PRIMARILY NON-VEGETATED

TERRESTRIAL
CULTIVATED AQUATIC AREAS
NATURAL and SEMI-NATURAL AQUATIC VEGETATION
AQUATIC or
REGULARLY FLOODED
ARTIFICIAL SURFACES
BARE LAND
ARTIFICIAL WATER BODIES
NATURAL WATER BODIES,
SNOW and ICE

The classification criteria used in the dichotomous phase are the presence of vegetation, edaphic condition and artificiality of land cover. The hierarchical phase is the following step in the process of legend development.
